Dr. Matthew Gidden, Dr. Ayelet Davidovitch
IIASA – International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis
In this seminar, we introduce the Integrated Assessment Framework utilized across multiple research programs at IIASA. We focus particularly on the energy-system model, MESSAGEix, the macroeconomic model, MACRO, and their interlinkage with the logit-based mode-choice transport mode, MESSAGE-Transport. We then present several policy-oriented results from country-specific MESSAGEix models, including deforestation effects in Brazil and the potential benefits of shale gas exploitation in South Africa, before introducing the methodology of the MESSAGEix Israel model and initial results.
Dr. Matthew Gidden is a nuclear engineer whose interests lie at the intersection of advanced energy technologies, energy policy, energy security, and non-proliferation issues. Before joining IIASA, Dr. Gidden received his PhD and Master’s degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His doctoral work focused on applying optimization and simulation techniques to develop new models of current and advanced nuclear fuel cycles. As a Research Scholar with the IIASA Energy (ENE) Program, Dr. Gidden develops tools and methods to answer interesting questions regarding the Energy-Climate-Food-Water Nexus across spatial and temporal scales. He is also one of the lead developers of the energy system and integrated assessment framework MESSAGEix, an open-source platform for integrated and cross-cutting modelling.
Dr. Ayelet Davidovitch is a Research Scholar in the Energy (ENE) program, with research interest in energy and climate change. She joined IIASA in November 2018, as an IIASA-Israel Program Postdoctoral Research Scholar. Dr Davidovitch' research at IIASA is focused on the Israeli energy sector trade-offs and synergies by 2030 by developing a national MESSAGEix model for Israel. Her previous work includes the implications of climate change on the insurance industry and the Israeli economy, economic analysis of green building, and economic modelling. Dr. Davidovitch has PhD in Natural Resources & Environmental Management from the University of Haifa Israel, M.Sc. in Behavioral and Management Sciences from the Technion and B.A. in economics and management.
